CINEMATHEQUE OF MACEDONIA

na Makedonija (the Cinematheque of Macedonia) was founded
in 1974 by the Decree for Proclamation of Law for Founding
the Cinematheque of Macedonia, approved and adopted by the
Parliament of Republic of Macedonia. However, the Cinematheque
started its activity in 1976, after the adoption of all of
the required documents.
The main goals and aims of the institution are: acquisition,
collecting, research, preservation, and storing, as well as
presentation of knowledge and facts on films and film and
video materials to the audience, at first films of Macedonian
origin and significant achievements of world film production.
In order to realize the above-defined activity, the Cinematheque
is completely financially supported (through the Ministry
of Culture) by the budget of the Government of Republic
of Macedonia.
In 2005 Cinematheque of Macedonia moved in new building at Nikola Rusinski street, No.1
Macedonian film production from 1905 until today, as well
as the films made by foreign authors in Macedonia in the period
until The Second World War are kept in a special depot department
in strict conditions of 14 C° and 50% pH. The other film materials
are placed in a suburb depot aside the quarters of the Cinematheque.
The Cinematheque of Macedonia is structured in three departments:
the Department for collecting, restoration and
cataloguing film and film materials (Film Archive Department),
the Department for documentation (with the
Written Documentation Department, Phototeque
and the Library as its segments), and the
Public Department (with Publishing
Department as its additional segment).
The film collection of the Cinematheque of Macedonia includes over 15.000 film prints, a collection of 72.000 items of various propaganda materials, stills and photos; more than 4.000 books and journals (on the issues of film theory and history) and more then 32.500 press-clipping items in its' specialized library; then, an archive of written documentation with more then 100.000 pieces of various documents, and also - a collection of old cinematography apparatus.
The Cinematheque is a member of the International
Film Archive Federation (FIAF) and the European
Cinematheques' Association (ACE).

Department For Collecting, Restoration And Cataloguing Film
And Film Materials
Film
Archive
The Film Archive of the Cinematheque of Macedonia collects,
restores and catalogues film materials - primarily on 35,
16 and 8 mm film tape, but also the film materials in video
format. The Film Archive has more than 6.000 film units in
11.041 copies (film titles and documentation), or 44.363 reels
of film materials from national and foreign production, both.

Department For Documentation
Written Documentation Department
The Written Documentation Department collects, enlists and
analyzes the written film documentation and all of the additional
written film materials: synopses, scenarios, shooting scripts
and other documents (authors' and co-production contracts,
personal documents of the film authors, etc.). Until now,
this Department has more than 100.000 units of various documents
and materials.

Phototeque
As non-dividable part of the film production, there are the
film photos (film stills), posters and all of the other propaganda
materials kept in the Cinematheque's Phototeque. There are
- collected and catalogued - 37.045 photos and 5.142 posters,
as well as 25.005 items of other propaganda materials (catalogues,
programs, etc.). In whole, there are 67.192 units - from the
national production only.
The Phototeque in the Cinematheque of Macedonia also has
a large number of materials of foreign production.

Topic
Library
In the Cinematheque of Macedonia, there is a specialized
library for various publications (books, periodicals, magazines,
etc.) from the film history, theory and aesthetic. There are
3.472 units of books and magazines available in the Cinematheque's
Library. Beside these, available for all of the interested
parties, there are more than 30.000 items of press clipping
from the daily and the periodical publications.

Public Department
Public
Relations Department
The Public Relations Department conducts activities in the
presenting and promoting of the film materials the Cinematheque
has in its possession - through leasing of films, film and
other materials, as well as through organizing of various
retrospective manifestations and exhibition - in Macedonia
and abroad.

Publishing Department
Among the other activities, the Cinematheque publishes various
publications (books, catalogues, and such from the fields
of film history and theory. Until now, the Cinematheque of
Macedonia has published 19 titles. The Cinematheque also publishes
the periodical magazine for film history, theory and culture
and other arts KINOPIS twice per year. Besides that, in the
field of electronic publishing, the Cinematheque has published
the CD-ROM Cinema Century in Macedonia.
